Counting, Probability & Statistics

Class Info

This course will embark on a study of counting, probability, and statistics and will use a problem-based teaching approach that will include material from the Introduction and Intermediate Counting and Probability Texts from Art of Problem Solving. After starting with a foundation of counting methods, such as casework, complementary counting, and constructive methods, the course will then survey basic probability techniques. Other topics to be studied in detail include the principle of inclusion and exclusion, probability distributions, pigeonhole principle, combinatorial identities. The course will also examine statistics and its applications as related to counting and probability. Each class will be dedicated to student-selected problems from a section/chapter of the textbook, and the instructor will guide students through the plan of attack and execution for each problem. Students will have the opportunity to choose specific topics or challenge problems, which will determine the instructor’s lesson plan. Counting, Probability & Statistics with Alphademic will be a fantastic course for students looking to excel in advanced MathCounts, AMC 8, 10, and 12, and other math competitions.

Satvik Dasariraju is a 10th grader at the Lawrenceville School, NJ. He recently taught the "Problem Solving in Prealgebra" class at Alphademic, and also has experience teaching students in STEM camps. Satvik has partaken in math competitions such as the AMC series, HMMT, and PUMaC, qualifying for AIME in the process. Satvik also is interested in science and research, having attended a selective summer research program this summer, where he developed an algorithm to segment blood cells, extract cytomorphological features, and implement machine learning to detect leukemia. His research has been published in a peer-reviewed journal (link: https://doi.org/10.3390/bioengineering7040120). In middle school, Satvik earned numerous Science Olympiad medals as a member of the third place national team. In his free time, Satvik enjoys playing the alto saxophone, participating in boy scouts, and playing tennis. Grateful for the opportunity to give back to the community, Satvik looks forward to spreading his love for learning.
